Title: Of domains and boundaries: physical chemistry of mixed amphiphile
membranes

The membrane raft hypothesis assumes that biological membranes contain
lateral compositional heterogeneities that contribute to cellular
function in a regulated manner. In particular, membrane rafts are
assumed to be involved in cellular phenomena such as molecular sorting,
signaling, and trafficking. Lateral membrane heterogeneities are
generally assumed to couple lipid mixing behavior with the formation of
signaling “platforms” that enrich certain types of proteins, while
excluding others.

This presentation will examine physical chemical details of inhomogenous
amphiphile membranes, spanning a wide range of membrane systems,
including living biological cells, cellular plasma membrane extracts,
self-assembled bilayer membranes, lipid monolayers, and membranes self-
assembled from diblock-copolymer amphiphiles. In addition to the domains
formation and phase behavior of these mixed membranes, we will discuss
measurements of a parameter associated with the phase boundary: the
phase boundary line tension, and present data for the partitioning of
proteins among co-existing membrane phases.
