International Symposium on Phyiscs of Non-Equilibrium Systems
Part 1: The 20th Nishinomiya-Yukawa Memorial Symposium
Self-Organized Structures and Dynamics far from Equilibrium
Shukugawa Kouminkan, Nishinomiya, Japan (3-4 October)
Part 2: Kyoto workshop
Development of Non-Equilibrium Physics in Material and Biological
Sciences
Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics, Kyoto, Japan (5-7 October)

Scope:
Non-equilibrium phenomena in systems far from thermal equilibrium
manifest themselves in various fields of science, including physics,
chemistry, biology, and materials science. Their study is of central
importance in the theory of pattern dynamics and statistical physics
and has aroused ever-increasing interest over the past few decades.
Also, it is expected that research about such phenomena will lead to
new applications in diverse fields of science and technology. For
example, there have been many attempts recently to apply the concept of
dissipative structures to domain control in systems of nano/mesoscopic
scales. Developments in non-equilibrium physics could also be important
for understanding fundamental properties of biological systems, such as
efficiency, robustness, sensitivity and adaptation. The main topics of
this symposium are self-organized dynamics in material science and
biological science and the fundamental theory of fluctuations in
non-equilibrium systems. In Part 1, an overview of these subjects is
given, and in Part 2, more specific problems are discussed.
